Have you ever been recommended a place which right after you arrived in it was just not as special as you had read and seen in that travel book your travel agency offered you? Well, there are times in life when you just have to go through these experiences to find that in the end there is a paradise waiting for you. Welcome to Spain.

Places of interest in Spain - Galicia

By Adal Bert at 2010-07-30 05:50:33
Overview

The autonomous community Galicia is a region with history and is situated in the northwest of Spain. In the year 1981, Galician Statute of Autonomy was legislated and Galicia was constituted under this. It consists of Lugo, A Coruña, Pontevedra and Ourense provinces.

This region is known as the land of the thousand rivers; they start from the mountains, wind over the region and finally form into rias before going to the sea.

The following are the borders of this community:

1.East - León and Castile

2.West – Atlantic Ocean

3.North – Bay of Biscay

4.South – Portugal

In addition to the above, Salvora, Ons, cies, Sisargas Islands, Cortegada Island, Arousa Island and Malveiras Islands form a part of Galicia. The population in 2008 in this community was about 2.8 million. The capital of this community is Santiago de Compostela. The city Vigo is in Pontevedra province and has the highest population – 300,000. People in Galicia speak Galician language that is more similar to Portuguese than Spanish.

History

Galicia has been in existence from the eighth century; however it achieved autonomy only in the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries. Galicia has two official languages – Galician and Spanish. The spoken language was only Galician but Latin was used for writing to some extent.

Climate

The average temperatures in a year are as follows:

Maximum – 20 °C in the months of July and August

Minimum – 8 °C in December-January

Culture

The culture in Galicia is somewhat different from that of the other parts of Spain. It is unique because people in Galicia identify themselves as Celtic instead of Hispanic or Latino. You will hardly find Flamenco dancing and singing; you also may not find people playing acoustic guitar and hand claps. Colored multi-layered dresses and sombrero hats are not popular.

Spanish language spoken in most of the parts of Spain is known as Castillano; however Galicians speak a unique Spanish regional language.

Cuisine

Rice dishes and pasta dominate most of the regions in Spain whereas in Galicia fish, meat meal and vegetables – potato in particular – are the main food items. There are more fish, crustaceans and shellfish in this town and hence these are the staple diet.

Sports and Entertainment

Some of the sports that are popular in Galicia are – football, futsal (Pls. check), basketball, handball, yachting and rowing.

Business & Economy

The economy is not uniform in all places of Galicia. The western coast has a large number of manufacturing and fishing industries and is economically strong. On the other hand the rural economy is mainly dependent on agriculture and these farmers hold small pieces of land. Increase in tourism in recent times has helped in the economic prosperity. Shipbuilding, textiles, granite work and automobile production are the manufacturing sectors that help the economy.
