Overview

The province of Girona in Spain is a part of the Catalonia region or autonomous community. It is located in the eastern part of Spain and it borders the provinces Lleida and Barcelona and also the Mediterranean Sea. The city Girona is the capital of the province Girona. The population in Girona province is about 690,000.


History

Iberians were the first inhabitants of this region. Later on Romans came and fortified this place and named it Gerunda. This was ruled by various cultures over a period of time and finally came under Holy Roman Empire’s control.

The Jews were powerful in the 12th century and they built a large Kabbalistic school in this place. In 1492 the catholic kings drove away the Jewish Community. In 1809, Napoleon conquered this place. In the 19th century the city walls were destroyed.


Climate

This town has a Mediterranean Climate where you have wet winter and dry summer. Summer is cool because of the Mediterranean Sea.

Maximum – 24 °C in the month of July-August

Minimum – 7 °C in December-January

Art and Culture

The places of interest in this town are as follows:

1.St. Mary's Cathedral – was built in the period 11th and 17th century AD. It incorporates a number of styles of architecture over a period of time.

2.Arab Baths – used in the ancient days for public bathing.

3.Museum of Archaeology – was a monastery built in the 12th century AD.

4.Jewish Quarter – the place where the Jewish community used to live; it has narrow as well as winding lanes with medieval stone buildings.

Cuisine

The Girona cuisine is made up of a large number of unconnected ingredients mixed up to form exotic dishes. These ingredients are – wild vegetables, mushrooms, game birds, livestock, olives, grains, fresh food, seafood, etc. The cuisine has the flavor of Arab, French, Greek and Italian cuisine.

Golf is a popular sports activity in this town. At present there are 45 golf courses. Other popular sports are – boating, bungie jumping, hot air ballooning, jet skiing, kayaking, mountain climbing, rafting, scuba diving, sea kayaking, sky diving, spelunking, water skiing, etc.
